Snowy owl — size comparison — facts and sources

The snowy owl breeds on Arctic tundra. Pale plumage, yellow eyes and densely feathered legs suit cold, open habitats. Adult males can be almost white, while females and younger birds usually have more dark markings. Some move south in winter to fields, dunes and other treeless areas.

Lemmings are important tundra prey, and their abundance influences breeding. Other mammals and birds are also taken. The owl watches from a low rise or post before making a short hunting flight. During the polar summer it also hunts in full daylight.

The female lays eggs in a shallow ground depression. Parents defend the nesting area and supply food. Snowy owls do not return to the same winter areas in equal numbers every year; movements depend partly on food conditions.
