The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The red-tailed hawk inhabits open North American landscapes: meadows, fields, deserts and woodland edges. It also uses parks and roadsides where lookout sites are available. It spends much of the day perched or circling above open space using rising air currents.
It most often hunts small mammals, including voles, mice, rabbits and ground squirrels. It also eats birds, snakes and carrion. It catches detected prey with its talons, adjusting hunting methods to food availability and terrain.
The pair nests high in a tree crown, on a rock ledge or a human-built structure. Partners may stay together for many years. Near the nest they vigorously drive away other raptors; courtship involves shared flights and steep dives.
