The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The passenger pigeon lived in forests of eastern North America. The male had a long, graduated tail and iridescent neck feathers. The birds travelled in enormous flocks, seeking abundant supplies of forest-tree seeds.
They nested in extensive colonies, and individual trees could hold many nests. Their numbers were so great that historical accounts described flocks obscuring the sky. However, mass hunting and forest loss caused a rapid population collapse.
The last known individual, a female named Martha, died at Cincinnati Zoo on 1 September 1914. Within a few decades the passenger pigeon went from extraordinary abundance to complete extinction.
