In breeding plumage an adult Mediterranean gull has a deep black hood, a red bill and red legs. Its pale wings end in white flight feathers, lacking the black tips typical of many gulls. This combination distinguishes it from the black-headed gull.
It nests colonially on islands and wetlands, often beside other gulls. Outside the breeding season it occurs on coasts, fields and in waterbird flocks. In winter plumage the head becomes largely white, with dark markings remaining around and behind the eye.
Young birds have a more contrasting wing pattern than adults. The full pale plumage appears gradually through successive plumage changes.
