Humboldt penguin — size comparison — facts and sources
The Humboldt penguin has a single black breast band and a pale stripe around the side of its head. Bare pink skin is visible at the bill base. Small dark spots on the white belly may form an individual pattern. The band arrangement is the main distinction from the Magellanic penguin.
It lives on dry, rocky coasts of Peru and Chile but feeds in the cool, productive waters of the Humboldt Current. It nests in burrows, crevices and sheltered hollows that reduce heating of eggs and chicks.
Sea conditions directly affect breeding success: periodic warming may reduce food availability. Nesting sites and reducing accidental capture in fishing gear matter for conservation.
