The common starling looks black from afar, but feathers reflect green and violet. Pale spots are clearest in winter; bills become yellow in spring.
It walks energetically over meadows, fields and urban lawns for invertebrates, also eating fruit and seeds. Social non-breeding flocks sometimes perform spectacular coordinated flights.
Nests occupy hollows and building holes. Calls include whistles and mimicked sounds.
