The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Berger Picard has a strong, fairly light build and large erect ears. Its harsh hair lies naturally, giving it a slightly tousled appearance. Eyebrows and beard emphasise its expression, while long legs permit free, efficient movement. It is hardy and capable on uneven ground.
It helped drive and protect flocks in northern France. It appeared at a show in 1863 alongside Beaucerons and Briards before breeding clearly separated these regional sheepdogs. The Picardy type was later established separately, retaining harsh hair and large ears. Its history centres on practical sheep work and farm guarding.
It is usually balanced, attentive and closely bonded to its people. It readily joins shared activities but can also assess situations independently. With strangers it often observes first rather than immediately seeking contact. Trust in its handler helps it engage in learning; intelligence combines with sensitivity and a clear need for meaningful, understandable communication.
