The Tervueren is a longhaired Belgian Shepherd variety recognisable by its dark mask and black-tipped hairs. It has erect ears, an elongated head and a light, almost square outline. An abundant ruff, bushy tail and longer leg hair give it a striking appearance. Beneath the coat it nevertheless remains a lean, nimble dog built for energetic movement.
It emerged during the organisation of Belgian herding dogs in the late nineteenth century. Its name comes from Tervuren, associated with early breeding of the variety. Together with the Malinois, Groenendael and Laekenois, it belongs to one breed whose first standards involved Professor Adolphe Reul. Former flock herding and guarding gradually gained service duties, sports and family companionship alongside them.
The Tervueren is very attentive to people and responds quickly to their signals. It readily engages in tasks but can be equally sensitive to tension, noise and unclear situations. It usually shows attachment to those close to it and may be more reserved with strangers. Alertness and interest in movement mean it rarely remains an indifferent observer; its activity includes not only running but constantly following events around it.
