The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound has a light, elongated body, strong legs and long ears lying close to its head. Its short coat comes in shades of red and fawn, often with a darker muzzle. Its build allows efficient movement over steep, uneven ground. Its movement and head carriage reveal a habit of carefully investigating scents close to the ground.
The breed was created using heavier scent hounds and lighter hounds. The aim was a dog for finding wounded game in mountains, where greater weight hindered movement. Its scent-hound designation is linked to tracking shot, wounded animals. The Bavarian retains a narrow speciality: calm, precise work on a difficult trail is particularly valued, rather than fast pursuit.
It is usually composed and strongly attached to its handler. It can keep its distance from strangers, observing them without haste. During an interesting activity it sustains concentration for a long time without constant stimulation. Its independence appears in patiently solving scent problems while remaining willing to maintain human contact. At home it often rests quietly near its owner.
