The Basset Artésien Normand has a long, low body, strong head and exceptionally long ears. Its short coat may combine white with fawn and black. It is lighter than the familiar Basset Hound but retains similar short-legged hound proportions. Movement should be fluid, allowing steady travel over extended periods.
Planned breeding of French shorthaired bassets began around 1870. Count Le Couteulx de Canteleu developed the Artois type, while Louis Lane developed the more pronounced Norman type. Their traditions produced the present Basset Artésien Normand. The breed name was adopted in 1924. Its working pace allowed a hunter to follow on foot and observe the tracking.
It is usually outgoing, affectionate and eager to meet people. Once absorbed by a scent, however, it becomes very persistent and finds it difficult to turn its attention away. It works methodically and unhurriedly, with a melodious voice.
