Red lionfish — size comparison — facts and sources

The red lionfish has reddish-brown and white stripes, broad fan-shaped pectoral fins and long fin spines. Some spines connect to venom glands and serve in defence. Elaborate fins and a striped body obscure its outline among reef shelters.

It hunts small fish, shrimps and crabs, often at dusk or night. It approaches slowly, spreading its pectoral fins to limit escape routes. The final strike is rapid, drawing prey into its broad mouth.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, it became an invasive predator after introduction to the western Atlantic and Caribbean. There it heavily consumes local fishes, altering their communities. Effective hunting and protection from venomous spines contribute to its success.
