The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The freshwater angelfish has a tall, laterally flattened body, large triangular dorsal and anal fins and threadlike pelvic fins. Vertical black bars cross silver flanks in the wild form. Bred varieties may be uniformly dark, golden, patterned or long-finned.
In South American waters it uses plants and submerged roots for cover, including seasonally flooded areas. A narrow body aids movement between upright obstacles. It eats small animals found among vegetation or captured from the water.
Before spawning, a pair selects and cleans a surface such as a broad leaf. Parents fan the attached eggs and drive off intruders. They may continue protecting larvae and swimming fry after hatching. Behaviour changes during this period: previously quieter fish actively defend a small area around their offspring.
