Heckel discus — size comparison — facts and sources

The Heckel discus has a tall, strongly flattened body with an almost circular outline. The wild form is brown with bluish lines and dark vertical bars. A particularly strong central bar helps identify typical Symphysodon discus. Many colourful domestic discus have mixed ancestry and do not represent this species.

It lives in quiet, sheltered waters of the Brazilian Amazon, including the Negro, Abacaxis and Trombetas basins. Submerged roots and other cover provide resting and breeding sites. It collects small invertebrates and plant material, using foods available locally.

Both parents defend the eggs and care for fry. Once free-swimming, young graze on nutritious skin secretions from the adults. They remain close to their flanks and gradually begin feeding independently.

Długość standardowa (SL): od końca pyska do nasady płetwy ogonowej. Przykład, nie średnia populacji. Widok przedni ma przybliżone proporcje.
