The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie is a short-haired, proportionately built hound with strong legs and drop ears. It retains the athletic outline of larger hounds at a smaller size. An elongated head and capable body allow free, sustained running. It lacks the short legs and heavy build typical of Bassets.
It originated in France through crosses between local hunting dogs and English hounds. Petite vénerie refers to hunting small game, not miniature dog size. It was bred chiefly for pack work: locating scent and pursuing it while people followed the hunt through the dogs' voices.
It is active, enduring and inclined to investigate independently. Scent often provides a stronger incentive than a visible object. It can maintain interest in one trail for a long time and becomes vocal when excited. Other dogs matter greatly, although behaviour within a group also depends on experience and upbringing.
