The Yorkshire Terrier is a small, compact dog with small upright ears and a lively expression. The adult coat is steel-blue over the body with golden tan on the head and legs. Long, straight, silky hair can transform its appearance when grown for showing. Beneath it remains a capable terrier that moves quickly and purposefully.
The breed developed in industrial northern England from small terriers accompanying workers. Their ancestors helped control rodents around homes and workplaces. Appearance became more standardised in the second half of the nineteenth century, and the name Yorkshire Terrier was adopted in 1870. The striking long coat and small size later helped its popularity as a companion.
Yorkies are generally alert, curious and confident in their abilities. They investigate new places, respond to sounds and readily join games. Closely attached to family members, they may firmly demand attention or a preferred activity. Many retain an interest in small animals. Their lively temperament often includes vocal responses to events.
