Yellow-tailed woolly monkey — size comparison — facts and sources

The yellow-tailed woolly monkey has thick, long, mahogany-brown fur. A pale border surrounds its muzzle. Yellowish hairs cover the underside of the distal part of its tail, giving it its name.

It is endemic to Peru and associated with Andean cloud forests. Its strong, prehensile tail supports it while moving and feeding in the canopy. It eats fruit, leaves, flowers and other plant parts; dietary composition changes with availability.

Deforestation and hunting threaten its populations. Mountain roads can expose previously isolated forests to further pressure, so conservation requires maintaining larger connected forest areas.
