African clawed frog — size comparison — facts and sources

The African clawed frog originates in southern Africa and spends almost its entire life in water. It has a flattened body, upward-facing eyes and powerful hindlimbs with extensive webbing. The three inner toes of each hind foot end in dark claws, giving rise to its name.

It occupies ponds, reservoirs and calmer waters. It eats invertebrates, larvae and other available animal food. The front feet help direct prey to the mouth. Lateral-line organs detect water movement, aiding navigation and foraging even in poor visibility.

Females are much larger than males. Breeding occurs in water, where eggs hatch into tadpoles with different structure and feeding methods. After metamorphosis young assume the typical adult form. Human-introduced populations also exist outside Africa.
