The wood frog is a small North American amphibian. It has a brown, buff or reddish back, a dark mask through the eye and a pale line along the upper lip. Adults may move away from water and live in damp litter.
It winters in shallow hollows beneath dead vegetation and snow. It can survive partial freezing of body water: glucose, among other substances, helps protect cells from damage. Tolerance depends on population and conditions and does not mean resistance to arbitrary freezing.
In spring frogs gather in shallow waters, including temporary pools. Males attract females with calls resembling short duck quacks. Tadpoles develop in water before young move onto land.
It occurs in forests, meadows, tundra and wetlands, using shallow pools during breeding. Its diet includes small invertebrates such as insects and spiders. Colours vary with the individual and lighting; illustrations are approximate reconstructions.
