The wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) is a northern form of American bison associated with Canada and Alaska. It has strongly developed forequarters, high shoulders and a dense coat. It inhabits a mosaic of forest, wetlands and open feeding areas.
It eats grasses, sedges and other plants. In winter its powerful head sweeps snow aside to reach food. Seasonal conditions influence pasture choice and herd movements.
It lives in herds. Its population history includes severe decline and long-running conservation and herd-restoration programmes. Wood Buffalo National Park was established partly to conserve this form of bison.
Bizon leśny jest większym i smuklejszym krewnym bizona preriowego. Ma wysoki, bardziej kanciasty garb barkowy i mniej obfite „spodnie” na przednich nogach. US Fish and Wildlife Service podaje dorosłym samcom 167–182 cm w barku oraz 350–1000 kg. Plansza używa reprezentatywnych 175 cm.
