The wolverine (Gulo gulo) is a stocky mustelid predator of cold Eurasian and North American regions. It inhabits tundra, taiga and mountains. Despite resembling a small bear, it is related to martens, badgers and otters. Its dark coat usually has a paler band along the flanks.
It lives alone and travels extensively in search of food. It uses carrion, hunts mammals and birds, and seasonally eats eggs and plant foods. Powerful jaws and strong head and neck muscles help it use frozen animal remains.
Broad feet distribute weight over snow, supporting capable movement through winter landscapes. It remains active in harsh conditions, while its large individual range reflects scattered food availability. Scent marks matter in communication between these secretive mammals.
