The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The winter white dwarf hamster inhabits steppes of western Siberia and eastern Kazakhstan. It shelters in burrows whose layout may differ regionally. It lines its nest with available material and experiences gentler temperature and humidity fluctuations underground than on the exposed surface.
It emerges to feed mainly after dark and during transitions between day and night. It uses seeds and invertebrates while foraging. Rest in shelter alternates with trips through grassland. Winter conditions affect both activity and physiology.
Seasonal coat change is linked to changing light through the year; fur may become white in winter. The young are born helpless with closed eyes and gradually develop fur.
