The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The southern white rhinoceros inhabits African savannas and open grasslands. It has a huge body, a heavy head and two horns made of keratin. Naturally grey skin takes on different tones from soil and mud. A broad, nearly rectangular mouth is adapted to grazing close to the ground.
It collects most food with its head lowered, moving between grazing areas, water and resting places. Mud baths help protect the skin from sunlight and insects. Adult males defend territories, while females and young may gather in small groups. Scent left at dung sites communicates information to other rhinos.
