The Colombian white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus) occurs in eastern Panama, Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. It uses primary forest, older secondary forest, mangroves and seasonally flooded forests. It favours the canopy but also visits other forest layers and the ground.
It eats mainly ripe fruit and insects. Leaves, flowers and bird eggs supplement its diet. In the island form on Gorgona, opening oysters by striking them against stones and catching crabs at low tide have been described. These observations concern particular populations, not necessarily all individuals.
It lives in groups, and the female usually bears one infant. Many popular capuchin accounts, however, come from studies of the Central American Cebus imitator, formerly grouped with this species. Knowledge of the Colombian species' behaviour is less complete, so details from those studies are not transferred directly.
