The western lowland gorilla is a subspecies of western gorilla from the equatorial forests of western Central Africa. It uses lowland and swamp forests. Mature males develop a silver saddle across the back and have a broad chest, long arms and large hands.
Its diet includes fruit, leaves, stems and bark, with small invertebrates as a supplement. Much travel between feeding areas takes place on the ground. Groups are led by an adult silverback, and long-term social relationships form an important part of their lives.
