The western harvest mouse inhabits open country in western North America and Mexico. Habitats include meadows, prairies and wetlands, as well as dry scrub and desert areas.
Seeds are its main food, supplemented by fresh plant parts and insects. It sometimes stores food in its nest and follows familiar routes under vegetation.
Usually solitary and nocturnal, especially before midnight, it may enter torpor in cold conditions. Its small nest is the centre of resting and feeding excursions.
