Western diamondback rattlesnake — size comparison — facts and sources

The western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous snake of dry regions in the United States and Mexico. It inhabits dry grassland, scrub and rocky ground. Dark diamonds follow the back, with contrasting rings near the tail tip. Heat-sensitive head pits locate warm-blooded prey even in dim light.

It usually ambushes prey. The tail rattle signals alarm; segment number is not a reliable age measure. It eats small mammals, also birds and other vertebrates.

It gives birth to live young. Suitable shelters help avoid overheating and survive the colder season.
