Weddell seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The Weddell seal lives along Antarctic coasts and associated ice. It has a rounded head, dark, spotted fur and a body adapted to long dives in cold water.

It hunts fish and cephalopods beneath ice cover. It returns to breathing holes and removes growing ice with its teeth, maintaining surface access. Knowing the locations of these openings is crucial during dives. On the ice it rests, gives birth and cares for its young.
