Eurasian water shrew — size comparison — facts and sources

The Eurasian water shrew inhabits freshwater margins and neighbouring vegetation. It is associated with streams, rivers and ponds, alternating terrestrial feeding with diving.

It seeks aquatic insects, molluscs and other invertebrates and also eats small fish and amphibians. During short dives it searches the bottom before returning ashore; hairs on feet and tail assist swimming.

Active both at night and by day, it does not hibernate. Usually solitary, it finds safe shelter in waterside burrows.
