The Walia ibex is associated with Ethiopia's Simien Mountains. Such a restricted range means that changes in the use of a small landscape area may matter to the whole species. Its conservation history includes establishing a national park and measures to reduce hunting.
It feeds on grasses, herbs, leaves and shoots, selecting available plants among rocks and on mountain meadows. It uses difficult slopes for resting and escape. Herd composition does not remain unchanged year-round, and males take part in seasonal competition for females.
The young remains in its mother's care. Nearby fields and livestock pastures create competition for space and food. Preserving routes between grazing places and safe cliffs is important.
