The vicuña inhabits high-altitude puna grasslands in the Andes. Its exceptionally fine, dense fibre helps retain heat through cold nights and strong winds. Longer pale chest hair forms a distinctive bib.
It eats short grasses and other highland plants. Males defend family groups, while other males may form separate herds. Animals use familiar resting places and water sources. Historical hunting for valuable fibre severely reduced populations; recovery involved protection and controlled shearing of wild herds.
