Spiny-tailed monitor — size comparison — facts and sources

The spiny-tailed monitor is a small monitor lizard of dry Australia. More slender than the largest monitors, it retains the group’s characteristic long neck and strong limbs.

It inhabits rocky terrain where crevices shelter it from predators and temperature extremes. Chiefly hunting by day, it eats insects and other small animals. It digs and searches confined spaces, investigating surroundings with a forked tongue.

Total length including the tail is approximately sixty to seventy centimetres. The spiny tail is an important defence, also useful while hiding among rocks.
