The tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) is a North American tailed amphibian whose adults live secretively in burrows. It inhabits forests, meadows and underground shelters near water bodies.

Adults often remain underground; damp nights favour emergence to seek invertebrates. They emerge in suitable humidity and during migrations to water.

It eats earthworms, snails, insects and small vertebrates. Eggs and larvae develop in water bodies.
