Thorny devil — size comparison — facts and sources

The thorny devil (Moloch horridus) is a spiny Australian desert lizard specialised in eating ants. It inhabits sandy deserts and scrub on sand. Spines cover the head, body and tail, creating an irregular outline.

Rather than pursuing varied prey, it concentrates on ants, picking them individually from the ground while moving slowly. Colour and spiny armour hinder predator detection. Tiny channels between scales direct collected water towards the mouth.

A female lays eggs in an underground chamber. Females are larger than males.
