Western terrestrial garter snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The western terrestrial garter snake inhabits varied western North American environments, from lakesides and streams to meadows, forests and mountains. It often stays near water but does not depend on it everywhere in its range.

Diet differs between populations. Individuals using waters may catch fish and amphibians. The female gives birth to live young that obtain food independently from the start. In colder conditions, the seasonal cycle includes overwintering in sheltered places.
