Hippocamelus antisensis
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The taruca inhabits high parts of the Andes, where grassy patches adjoin rocks and steep slopes. This setting provides food and escape sites. The animal moves over uneven ground.
It feeds on grasses, herbs and shrub leaves. Plant selection depends on the season and their availability on the slope. Food is sought in scattered patches of vegetation, so favourable feeding places may be some distance apart.
Tarucas occur in small groups whose composition may change. Females with young and adult males do not always form one permanent group.
