The Sumatran serow is a stocky mountain bovid associated with rainforests and steep, rocky slopes. Dark grey or almost black hair contrasts with a paler throat, and both sexes have short horns. It eats leaves, shoots, herbs and other plants available in its forest habitat.
It usually leads a solitary, territorial life and is active at dawn and dusk. It returns to fixed defecation sites, creating latrines that mark its territory.
