The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is a great ape of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It inhabits humid lowland and mountain forests. Long reddish hair, exceptionally long arms and grasping hands and feet suit life in the canopy. It is a separate species from the Bornean orangutan.
Fruit is important in its diet, supplemented by leaves, shoots and other forest foods. It uses branches and vines to move between trees. Fruiting-tree availability influences feeding sites and encounters with other individuals.
Adults are predominantly solitary, while females care for young for a long time. Mature males may develop broad cheek flanges and a throat sac. Strongly associated with the canopy, even large males descend less often than their Bornean relatives. Forest continuity is therefore particularly important for everyday travel.
