Striped skunk — size comparison — facts and sources

The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a North American mammal with contrasting black-and-white hair. It inhabits woodland, meadows and scrub, including areas around buildings. White markings usually run from head along back, but their width and arrangement vary individually.

An omnivore, it eats insects, small mammals, eggs and fruit, using seasonally available foods. It chiefly feeds after dark, investigating the ground and concealed places. Daytime shelter protects it from adverse weather and disturbance.

Usually solitary, it may share a winter refuge with several others. Its best-known defence is a pungent secretion from glands near the tail base, which it can direct towards an opponent. Its striking colouring warns of this effective defensive response.
