The striped hyena inhabits dry scrub, savannas, rocky terrain and mountains in northern and eastern Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. A long mane extends from the neck along the back.
Carrion makes up a substantial part of its food, supplemented by fruit, insects and small vertebrates. It is mainly active at night and usually forages alone, resting by day in a den or rocky crevice.
When threatened, it raises its mane to appear larger. Its way of life differs from the large-clan organisation characteristic of spotted hyenas.
