Steppe lemming — size comparison — facts and sources

The steppe lemming inhabits open Eurasian areas where grassy vegetation provides food and cover. It favours ground suitable for digging burrows. Underground passages link resting places with surface feeding grounds, reducing time spent visible to predatory birds.

It feeds mainly on grasses and herbaceous plants. Its activity is divided into shorter bouts interspersed with rest. It may use farmland, but ploughing destroys shelters and forces movement. Steppe conditions change plant availability through the year.

Breeding and juvenile survival depend on resources and environmental conditions. The female cares for offspring in an underground nest. The lemming provides food for predatory steppe birds and mammals.
