Star-nosed mole — size comparison — facts and sources

The star-nosed mole selects wet soil, wetlands and watersides in eastern North America. It excavates a tunnel network but, unlike many moles, also often obtains food in water.

It searches for earthworms, leeches and insect larvae. Mobile appendages around the nose form an extremely sensitive touch organ with which it rapidly examines encountered objects. While feeding it patrols both tunnels and underwater substrates.

Burrows may run along wet banks. The animal is adapted to life between two environments: broad front feet serve for digging, while swimming ability provides access to aquatic prey.
