Sri Lankan elephant — size comparison — facts and sources

The Sri Lankan elephant is a subspecies of the Asian elephant inhabiting Sri Lanka. It uses forests and a mosaic of open areas through which it travels between feeding sites and water. Extensive space and freedom of movement matter greatly in its daily life.

It takes varied plant food: grasses, leaves, shoots and bark. Its trunk serves to grasp plants, drink and explore the surroundings. Feeding animals move across the landscape; where their routes meet crops, conflicts with people may result.

Females and young form family groups led by experienced females. Within a herd are smaller mother-and-offspring units. Adult males have a different social pattern from these families. Care and travelling together help young gradually learn their environment and adult behaviour.
