The spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) inhabits damp North American forests and temporary fishless pools.

Adults spend most of their time underground, in leaves or beneath wood. They emerge more readily on damp nights when skin is less exposed to drying.

It eats forest-litter invertebrates. Spring rain triggers migration to breeding pools. Females attach jelly-like egg masses to submerged objects. Larvae live and hunt in water, then metamorphose and begin terrestrial life.
