Spotted hyena — size comparison — facts and sources

The spotted hyena is a social predator of sub-Saharan African savannas, semi-deserts, scrub and mountain forests. Longer forelimbs give its back a characteristic slope towards the hindquarters. Powerful jaws can crush bones.

Spotted hyenas both hunt ungulates and eat carrion. They live in complex clans with female-dominated hierarchies. Females are also larger on average than males. Clan members recognise one another through scent and calls.

A clan can contain dozens of individuals that do not always stay together. Young grow up within this social hierarchy, and their mother’s rank influences their relationships with other hyenas.

Wbrew popularnemu stereotypowi hiena cętkowana nie jest wyłącznie padlinożercą: często aktywnie poluje, także zespołowo. Żyje w złożonych klanach kierowanych przez samice, które są większe od samców. Samce ważą zwykle około 45–60 kg, a zakres gatunku sięga około 80 kg. Hiena pozostaje więc wyraźnie poniżej 100 kg i jest tu uczciwie oznaczona jako uzupełniający wielki drapieżnik. Na planszy używamy 80 cm w barku w obrębie podawanego zakresu 75–85 cm.
