The speckled ground squirrel has a brown back with pale spots and a short tail. It lives on steppes, meadows and other open grasslands in eastern Europe. It feeds by day near its burrow and hibernates in winter to reduce energy expenditure.
It eats grasses, seeds and small invertebrates. The burrow provides rest and escape from predators. It often surveys the area supported on its hind legs, with its head above low vegetation.
