Sperm whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The sperm whale is the largest living toothed predator. It has a huge, nearly rectangular head, a narrow lower jaw and wrinkled skin. It inhabits deep oceans, where much of its prey lives far below sunlight.

It mainly hunts squid and deep-water fish. A series of clicks produces echoes that help detect objects and approach prey in darkness. Deep dives alternate with time at the surface to replenish oxygen.

Females and young form lasting family groups, maintaining acoustic contact and sharing care of offspring. Growing males gradually leave these groups, and older males often travel alone. Differences between male and female lifestyles are important in understanding the species’ ocean distribution.
