Spade-toothed whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The spade-toothed whale is exceptionally poorly known in the South Pacific and identified through specimens and genetic samples. New Zealand finds revealed its appearance; for a long time only skeletal fragments were known.

A male found in Otago in 2024 provided exceptionally well-preserved anatomical material. Diet, behaviour at sea and social organisation remain poorly understood. Known find locations do not yet define the full area living animals may travel through.
