Tamandua tetradactyla
od pyska do nasady ogonaMeasurement: side
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The southern tamandua inhabits varied South American habitats, from humid forests to dry scrub. It spends much time in trees but also travels on the ground between feeding sites.
It locates ant and termite nests by smell, opens them with powerful claws and collects prey with a long sticky tongue. A prehensile tail provides extra support during arboreal searches.
Usually solitary, it rests in hollow trunks and other refuges. Colour varies geographically: a dark waistcoat may be conspicuous or faint.
