The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The southern ground hornbill is a large black bird of African savannas. Bare red skin surrounds its eyes and throat, and a low casque tops the powerful bill. It spends most of the day walking in a family group, seeking insects, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. It roosts in trees and flies capably.
Usually one pair breeds within a group. Other birds may help defend the territory and bring food to the young. The nest occupies a large tree cavity; the female remains free to leave rather than sealing the entrance as many tree-dwelling hornbills do.
Deep, carrying calls maintain group contact and announce occupation of a large area. Slow reproduction and dependence on old trees mean new woodland cannot quickly replace suitable nesting sites.
IUCN Hornbill Specialist Group podaje 90–100 cm długości, nie wysokości, oraz 3,46–6,18 kg u samców. Plansza używa niższego punktu 85 cm do czubka głowy.
