Southern elephant seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The southern elephant seal is the largest living seal. Adult males have massive necks and elongated noses resembling short trunks; females are much smaller. It occurs around Antarctica and on subantarctic islands, using sandy and rocky shores for breeding and moulting.

It spends most of the year at sea hunting fish and squid. It dives deeply and can remain submerged for a long time. Females have been recorded diving to around 1600 metres and for nearly two hours. Outside breeding, animals mostly travel alone.

Dense gatherings form ashore, where males compete for access to females. Threats and loud calls accompany fights. A female bears one pup, which gains weight rapidly during a short nursing period. She later leaves the coast and returns to ocean feeding grounds.

Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza skaluje zwierzę do 450 cm długości całkowitej. Około 150 cm wysokości pokazanej sylwetki wynika z jej naturalnych proporcji i postawy, a nie z osobnej normy gatunku.
